Though lesser known in our current era than her “male” counterparts, Asherah is an ancient Semitic goddess associated with fertility and the natural world. She is also referred to as El’s consort; whereas El was said to rule the heavens, Asherah was associated with the sea. Worship of Asherah took many forms, including the veneration of “Asherah poles.” These were a category of idols that manifested in various forms, including wooden poles, carved trees, or living trees in elevated places. In the Hebrew Bible, an Asherah refers to such objects used for the purpose of idol worship.
The photographs presented in the exhibition were made with medical and crime scene Polaroid cameras on a variety of photographic surfaces. They depict skewed views of man-made objects and elements from the natural world, exalted by their staging and reproduction.

Yair Oelbaum (b. 1988, New York) lives in Milan, NY, where he works as a clinical social worker. He published his first collection of photographs, Asleep in Dirt (Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König) in 2024, which compiled macro photographs shot between 2014 and 2022. His recent solo exhibitions include Teiku at Galerie Buchholz, New York (2025); In The Hopper at Aléa, Paris (2025). Group exhibitions include The Family Guns at Reena Spaulings, Paris (2025).
